FuelGae Project: Contributing to a Sustainable Future
Our Roman production site is providing crucial expertise in steel production and CO2 emissions data, while also hosting a pilot site for photobioreactor technology as a contributor of the FuelGae consortium.
As part of ArcelorMittal Europe - Tubular Products' commitment to decarbonization and sustainable steel production, we are proud to participate in the EU-funded Horizon Europe FuelGae project. This project focuses on capturing CO₂ emissions and converting them into biofuels using innovative, microalgae-based technology.
At our Roman facility, a key end-user in this initiative, we are providing industrial expertise, especially in seamless tube manufacturing and steel production processes, as well as sharing CO₂ emissions data to support sequestration and conversion goals.
A major component of FuelGae is a pilot site hosted at our Roman production location, where we are testing photobioreactor (PBR) technology under real industrial conditions. This pioneering technology captures site emissions, creating an opportunity to evaluate biofuel production potential.
“Our involvement in the FuelGae project marks a transformative step in advancing ArcelorMittal Europe - Tubular Products' decarbonization efforts,” says Unai Aramburu, Sustainability & Decarbonisation Coordinator. “By leveraging microalgae to capture CO₂ and create advanced biofuels, we’re developing groundbreaking solutions that actively reduce emissions across our industrial operations.”
While FuelGae is still in the pilot phase, it represents a significant step toward reducing the carbon footprint of steel production and advancing biofuel solutions. We are thrilled to be part of a consortium pushing the boundaries of industrial decarbonization.
Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to explore innovative ways to transform emissions into valuable resources!
