Harnessing Solar Power for Industrial Efficiency

We are collaborating in a pilot installation as part of ASTEP'S EU-funded Horizon 2020 project that will help validate a system's potential to reduce energy consumption in thermal processes.

ArcelorMittal Tubular Products Iasi is proud to be part of ASTEP – Application of Solar Thermal Energy to Processes – an EU-funded Horizon 2020 project that aims to accelerate the decarbonization of industrial heat processes through solar energy.a

The project intaswroduces a new solar heating concept tailored for industrial operations requiring heat at temperatures above 150°C. It combines two innovative technologies: the SunDial solar collector and a thermal energy storage system using phase change materials. The result is a modular, efficient system designed to operate consistently, even during low sunlight or partial nighttime hours.

Our Iasi production site was selected to host one of the pilot installations. ArcelorMittal Tubular Products has contributed real-world industrial data to support system design, and our teams have worked closely with project partners to fine-tune daily and yearly operations based on our thermal requirements.

While the system is still being finalized, including the arrival of the SunDial unit currently in testing in Madrid, we’re excited about what this collaboration represents: a real opportunity to explore how solar thermal energy can reduce reliance on fossil fuels and lower emissions in heavy industry.

This project reflects our ongoing commitment to innovation, sustainability, and the transformation of energy use in steel production.
