Burri relies on XCarb® precision steel tubes from ArcelorMittal Tubular Products Altensteig

Altensteig, May 5th, 2025 - Burri has had the iconic “Landi Bank” bench in its range since 1939 – now also in a more sustainable version with CO2-reduced steel thanks to ArcelorMittal Altensteig and the steel specialist Kindlimann as a commercial service provider.

The Swiss manufacturer Burri Public Elements is taking another step towards sustainability: after using solar power for production and local wood as a material, the company is now also focusing on CO2-reduced steel. In collaboration with ArcelorMittal Tubular Products Altensteig as producer and the steel specialist Kindlimann, a more sustainable version of the legendary “Landi Bank” has been created.

“The entire industry is talking about CO2-reduced steel, but nobody dares to take the first step. That's why we decided to simply do it ourselves,” explains Stephan Bachmann, Partner at Burri. In ArcelorMittal Altensteig, Burri found a partner that could supply industrially produced CO2-reduced steel pipes for the first time. The “XCarb® Recycled and Renewably Produced” steel is produced in an electric arc furnace (EAF) using 100 % electricity from renewable energy and at least 75 % recycled scrap. The electricity used in production comes exclusively from sources such as solar and wind energy. This means that XCarb® pipes cause up to 72 % lower CO2 emissions compared to pipes made from steel produced via the blast furnace route. This has been independently verified by a certificate of origin.

To test the processing properties, Burri produced an initial test series of the “Landi Bank” in summer 2024 – successfully. “The steel could be bent, welded and galvanized without any problems,” reports Bachmann. Adrian Alecu, Managing Director of ArcelorMittal Altensteig, regards the collaboration as groundbreaking for the entire industry: “This project shows how supply and demand have to collaborate within the supply chain in order to reduce CO2 emissions. From the steel manufacturer to the dealer to the end customer, everyone contributes to decarbonization.” Marco Giovanoli, Sales Manager at Kindlimann, adds: “By using this steel, the ecological footprint of all processing companies is reduced - without compromising on quality.”

With the CO2-reduced “Landi Bench”, Burri is setting a strong example for sustainable outdoor furniture – and proving that environment-friendly alternatives are already marketable today.
